The Nexcenter™ accreditation awarded to IS’s Parklands data centre recognises it as a first-rate facility, and deservedly so.
It is the first data centre of such calibre and quality in Africa (one of only 140+ worldwide) and facilitates easier access to data centre space in the region for global carriers through the internationally renowned NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) brand.
The recognition of the Parklands data centre’s levels of excellence followed a lengthy inspection by NTT Com which weighed up more than 300 criteria including location, security, cooling and operations, evaluated against NTT’s notoriously stringent requirements. The fact that the facility is carrier-neutral and offers international scale were crucial factors in its favour hosts the Johannesburg Internet Exchange.
The Parklands centre is subject to annual audits to maintain its Nexcenter™ status. It will be evaluated on a facility level to ensure that configurations are still optimal and on an operational level to ensure that policies have been upheld.
NTT’s validation of IS’s data centre as a world-class facility, and of our peoples’ leading expertise, should provide local and international clients with the peace of mind that comes from knowing their data is in safe hands.
Parklands Data centre’s capabilities
The centre’s ideal location is especially noteworthy and was one of the key determinants for NTT Com inspectors. It is situated within a 10km radius of the country’s premier business districts in Sandton and Johannesburg and close to the bustling area of Rosebank, which is undergoing a multibillion-rand facelift. This proximity means minimal latency, making it an obvious choice for local and multinational enterprises. The Johannesburg Internet Exchange has given its vote of confidence, entrusting the centre with its hosting.
The Parklands Data centre expansion project is under way with and phase 1 one, containing 130 racks, is expected to be completed by AugustJuly 2018. At a cost of roughly half a billion rands, the design of the prefabricated extension accommodates flexible modules to cater for specific market needs, housed in a modern structure. Once complete, the Parklands facility will have a total capacity of 572 racks and 2.2 megawatts of IT power, which is effectively double its current capacity.
Subsequent modules will be ordered in configurations that are best suited to client requirements. These additional modules will need to be ordered with up to six months of lead time and will be shipped from Europe with flooring, cooling and uninterrupted power supply pre-installed.
